JARBOE & FATHER MURPHY JOIN IN COLLABORATION ON A NEW RELEASE AND ON STAGE THIS SEPTEMBER
American artist and performer Jarboe and Italian occult duo Father Murphy will be touring together Europe this Autumn, promoting a collaborative EP out September 22nd on Consouling Sounds.
Jarboe and Father Murphy's connection runs deep. Jarboe continues to have a profound influence on Father Murphy's musical path, and there is a strong, mutual understanding of what they define as a "sense of guilt", rooted in their Catholic upbringing, which informs their music, both together and independently. Approaching the EP, both Jarboe and Father Murphy each wrote a song, which they exchanged for the other to finalise, the result being a rich reflection of the spirit of both artists, and their meaningful bond. The Jarboe & Father Murphy EP was mastered by an infamous engineer, Davide Cristiani at Bombanella soundscapes studio in Italy, using a technique he calls "anti-mastering" whereby he irradiates the analogue master with deep, pure 432hz sounds in a process that somehow gives the master the same benefits than a defragmentation does to a hard disk. It works the sounds together in harmony, the result being much brighter and more real, which is very befitting to the release.
Father Murphy shall open with the rituality of their alluring live performance, followed by a haunting set that combines Jarboe's unique voice and Father Murphy's charmed sounds, together they shall draw upon Jarboe's old and new songs, including the two brand new pieces from the EP. JARBOE
(U.S.A.)
Jarboe draws from a variety of sources: childhood in the Mississippi delta and New Orleans, life in NYC’s east village during the post no-wave scene as member of Swans, university studies in literature and theatre, global travels, and a history of extensive recordings, collaborations (Philip Anselmo, Attila Csihar, Blixa Bargeld, J.G. Thirlwell, Merzbow, PanSonic, Chris Connelly, Neurosis and many others), and performances (clubs, theaters, art galleries, cathedrals, festivals, live radio, television, film). Jarboe’s voice and music is known for bold experimental as well as melodic diversity and expression. Over the course of her life through efforts in past and present disciplines, Jarboe explores the rebuilding/reinventing of identity and the elemental structures of personae.
“For fourteen years the sole constant member of Swans, and also the creative force behind half a dozen solo releases, Jarboe is one of the most remarkable women in extreme music” - TERRORIZER
“..A diabolical crossroads meeting between Bessie Smith and Diamanda Galas… Jarboe can be a gospel blues belter or screeching sorceress with equal devious ease. Her flexible and hugely expressive voice leaps from the whimpers of a terrified child to avenging Shiva screams without pause or warning.” – WILLIAMETTE WEEK
“Jarboe somehow turns the simplest moment into mind-crushing intensity” - KERRANG!

FATHER MURPHY
(ITALY)
Father Murphy is the sound of the Catholic sense of guilt. A downward spiral aiming at the bottom of the hollow, and then digging even deeper.
Through the years, the band became one of the most interesting and peculiar musical entities coming out of Italy, especially well known for their intense live shows, something in between a rite and an artistic performance.
They furiously performed all over Europe and toured North America with Deerhoof, Dirty Beaches, Iceage and Xiu Xiu, and has been praised by the Archdruid Julian Cope, Michael Gira, Geoff Barrow, among many others.
Leading figures of that community that Simon Reynolds defined “Italian Occult Psychedelia”, the outfit last effort is the 2015 trilogy of the Cross, consisting of three different releases on the topic: Calvary (Blue Tapes), Croce (The Flenser) and Lamentations (Backwards).
“From the harbingers of occultism and eroticism lifted from their nation's giallo tradition, to their theatrically adopted pseudo-religious personas (unless Murphy's a real-life 'padre', in which case I can only beg his forgiveness), this Italian group are a 'cult' band in every sense of the word” - THE QUIETUS
“Father Murphy (live sets) have that uncanny mixture of improvisational ease and skin-tight precision that makes for an exciting, unpredictable set. Its crunchy no-wave guitars were tempered by a melodic sophistication, like punks who secretly learned classical” - SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY
“The dead-eyed chants, keyboard drones and bone-dry rhytms of Italian Father Murphy's second album conjure up a funereal atmosphere somewhere between homemade Morricone and toytown Goblin... That ol'devil Dario would surely approve” - THE WIRE
