85% of Insects ‘Mistakenly’ Go Gay
A new study examining why almost nine out of ten male spiders and insects routinely indulge in gay sex has suggested that most do it because as well as being desperate for sex generally they’re confused by pheromones from previous male/ female encounters.
“Insects and spiders mate quick and dirty,” study chief Doctor Inon Scharf of Tel Aviv University noted in an interview with the journal of Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology
“The cost of taking the time to identify the gender of mates or the cost of hesitation appears to be greater than the cost of making some mistakes,” he suggested. (Independent: http://ind.pn/1aEc789 )
In an earlier study of gay insects, scientists discovered that lesbian fruit flies practice complex courtship rituals which the New York Times described at the time as "all part of standard fruit fly seduction."
“They gently tap virgin females on the legs, play songs on their wings for them, “ Alternet columnist Patrick Letellier noted (in 2005), “And, when that seems to go well, they lick the females in all the right places.”http://www.alternet.org/story/27444/that_oh-so-natural_fruity_feeling
The fruit fly findings alarmed religious fundamentalists from Focus on the Family whose spokesperson Warren Throckmorton insisted had no implications for human sexuality.
"Fruit flies don't date, go to bars, go to church -- there is no way you can make the leap,” he protested, "Fruit flies don't have fantasies, wishes, hopes, dreams or any of that,” he insisted.
