On April 22, the South African electro duo Double Adapter are playing their first gig in the Czech Republic (catch them at the Chapeau Rouge with Iva 8bitová, DJ menšík and the Fakes). We chatted about colours, sounds and other things.
> We heard this is your first time in Czech rep - how do you imagine Czech
> and what do you expect from this trip?
Dan: I imagine the Czech rep to be like a Jan svankmajer film, curious and full of oddities. From this trip I'm expecting the unexpected that's for sure.
Tim: I was in the Czech rep last year actually, just for fun. I'm expecting another crazy night on the cobbled streets, some good Czech beer, and hopefully a crowd that's ready to party with us!
How is the scene in Johannesburg?
> Dan: the scene in Johannesburg is growing, very single party seems to be
getting bigger and better and more and more kids from different walks of life
are starting to party harder then ever before
Tim: definitely what Dan said. On top of that, more and more musicians
and producers are coming out of the woodwork - I think sa music will
be quite a force to be reckoned with in upcoming years.
> You chose names with quite a lot of Rs (Email CheckeRR + FlikkeRR) - how so?
> Dan: ha ha, I actually can't even remember how that came about, guess it
seemed super cool at the the time.
Tim: Dan had flikkerr long before i had emailcheckerr... I guess we
just wanted them to match :) the whole email checker thing came as a
joke about laptop djs who could actually be checking email while they
play... We were one of the first dj acts in joburg to use a laptop
live, but we sure as he'll don't check email while we're on stage...
> Do you have any releases out or planned? Where can we hear your music?
> Dan: tim...
Tim: we have a bunch of mix tapes out at the moment, you can search
sonotberlin, or assemblylive on sound cloud and get straight to our
sets! We're planning our first release for later this year, and at the
moment 95% of the tracks we play are our own edits or mashups... We're
big fans of reinterpreting songs to fit the flow and energy of a
double adapter set.
> Your weirdest musical experience?
> Dan: i guess that would be recorder class in primary school, I just didn't get it and to this day I find that instrument confusing. Maybe it's all the holes in it.
Tim: I think every musician has played to an empty club at some point
in their career for whatever reason... Back when I was in my first
band after high school, we played a few empty shows! Always a weird
experience!
> Do you find clothes important, and what are you fave brands?
> Dan: yeah I love clothing, I don't have any international brand favorites
really but I do like cheap Monday and silver spoon, a brand from south Africa.
Tim: I love clothes, in Johannesburg we are lucky to live next door to
an awesome store called The Street, they stock some great brands like
feiyue shoes, rvca and nook watches. I also love instinct from
Australia, and Ray ban sunglasses are not optional for me!
> What are you doing against the grey? (this because the name of the press is
"proti sedi", which means "against the grey")
> Dan: I wear an all white suite! Can't get more against grey then that.
Tim: double adapter is all black and white - we hate the grey! All our
live shows are really energetic - in a way, we're a living protest to
the grey!
