Love and peace are in the air as Mexx’s March 2012 Girlswear collection revisits the early ‘70s. Boasting a wide range of era-typical features such as braiding, crocheting and pleating, this collection gives girls everything they need to go boho-chic.

With a definite nod to the hippy era, waists come up and necklines go down with high-rise pants and peasant and tunic tops. As a contrast, dungarees add a bit of tom-boy spirit. And what self-respecting ode to the 1970s would be complete without flared leg denim?

Texture also comes to the fore in the shape of applications and embroidery set off against ‘love and peace’ and butterfly graphics. Traditional crocheting and innovative crochet tape complete this broad fabric mix. A dash of broderie anglaise keeps things decidedly girly.

Colors are generally soft in the March collection. Powder blue, snow white, ivory heather make a grand showing. And besides the requisite indigo, accent colors such as bright magenta, flower fuchsia and orchid pink tie the ‘70s vibe in with the flowery prospects of springtime.

APRIL

The 1970s vibe spills over into Mexx’s April 2012 Girlswear collection, but this time around with the emphasis on graphics. Time to “ruffle” some feathers with some outspoken prints and colors as we transition from spring to summer.

With plenty of smocking and gathering, ruffles are decidedly on-trend this time around. Cut-out floral designs and bindings for denims and tees keep things light and airy and add an extra cute touch.

Key items for April are the smock top and bloomers; and the jumpsuit makes its return. Fabrics tend towards woven and knits with plenty of vacation-themed allover prints featuring cameras, sunglasses, ice cream and flowers, some of which even appear on printed pants. And as the weather warms up, shorts and shirt dresses abound as well. Halter necklines tie in with the trend from the previous month for some mix-and-match continuity.

And with colors ranging from basic white and storm gray to purple sky, bright orchid and lime green, summer is definitely on its way.
