PRESS RELEASE

GROUND LEVEL RECORDS are very proud to present the first two nuggets from STYLUS REX's debut album AMPLIFY.

VIDEO with some blatantly mad elephant action - created by Stylus Rex himself!

These two original tracks set the tone of what's to come when the album drops in December.

BLATANT ELEPHANT - A completely fresh rework of the Stylus Rex classic 'Blatant' originally released on Punk Funk in 2005, the new cut has evolved into an elephant sized slab of dance-floor-focused production. The track evolves continually throughout with twisting sonics and tech-funk thrills coming at you as if you're cutting between several perfectly matched records and features a breakdown & build that electrifies. This is bass-lead feel-good breakbeat of the highest order.

RHYTHM ROLLER - This is a bass pulsing future warehouse synth warping innovation. Warm blobs of bass keep the track rolling on the freshest of grooves while crisp and wobbly synthlines snake around it building the mayhem and releasing the pressure. Influenced by dubstep, breaks and the sublime sonics of Rhythm & Stealth era Leftfield, this is the sound of a producer unencumbered by genre boundaries and looking to break new ground.

BLATANT ELEPHANT  is a rework of my his single BLATANT  which had support from MEAT KATIE, JDS, ALI B, STANTON WARRIORS, RENNIE PILGREM, BEN & LEX to name a few.

Radio support for previous releases on GROUND LEVEL came from ANNIE NIGHTINGALE, EDDY TEMPLE MORRIS, JAY CUNNING, 5 star reviews, FEATURES in IDJ, DJ MAG & MIXMAG.

Stylus Rex- Biog

In the beginning there were drums. Stylus Rex aka Greg Marshall smashed out drums for various underground Alt-Rock & Indie-Dance bands in the mid-nineties which involved studio sessions with some major producers like Steve Lovell (Blur, Julian Cope), Dan Carey (Hot Chip, La Roux) and Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke). Watching these studio geniuses at work would influence the shift in focus in the coming years from drumming to production.

The real introduction to the underground beats scene came about in '98 when London based 'Dust II Dust Records' (the original home of Sunday Best Recordings) signed a band he was involved with called 'Multiscreen'. Loaded up with the entire back catalogue of the label's vinyl (kindly donated by label boss Massimo Bonadio) and the freshest cuts available from Camden's Vinyl Addiction, he DJ'd his first set and became a resident at Brixton club 'The Junction' precisely 3 weeks after buying a set of decks. Several years of immersion in dance culture and honing of production skills followed and culminated in the release of the first Stylus Rex 12” single Boomstick in 2005; a grimey white label, picked up for sale solely at Phonica Records by Heidi Van Den Amstel & Vinyl Addiction by Ray Stanley.

The first proper Stylus Rex release came when 'Blatant' was championed by JDS on his Punk Funk imprint in early 2006 & gained wide support with plays from Eddy Temple Morris, Stanton Warriors, Meat Katie, Ali B & Rennie Pilgrem to name a few.

While Dj'ing at a Spectrum event later in 2006, a meeting with Andy McAllister who was about to start the label 'Ground Level' resulted in the release of next single 'Serious Wobble' and the forging of a label/artist relationship that would see 5 singles released through 2006-2010. The releases Cops On Coke, Surge, Spangle Wagon & Volta saw the likes of Radio 1's Annie Nightingale, Kiss Fm's Jay Cunning, Krafty Kuts & Soul Of Man being added to the list of supporters. Releases & remixes on several other labels - Re-Connect, BijouBeats & Bronzerat Records (Seasick Steve) were well received through this period and helped secure Stylus Rex DJ sets at key clubs like London's Ministry Of Sound, Heaven, The Fridge & The Cross as well as shows across the UK.

An album of bass-driven warehouse beats & film influenced cinematic soundscapes is ready to drop on Ground Level later this year. With the addition of mind altering visual elements to the DJ shows, the Stylus Rex sound is about to amplify.
