“Male emotions deal with the contradiction between the seemingly violent potential of the sex act and the love for his beloved, whom he does not wish to hurt or profane. It seems to me that all too often men overcome this problem by realizing their sexuality with a less intensely loved woman, whom they chose to marry instead of “the one.” The male principle is disunited from the beginning, and loves in constant contradiction to reason and emotion” - Lucie Ferlik
DIVUS London are proud to present ABOUT LUCIFER, the first UK solo exhibition of Czech artist Lucie Ferlik. Rich with art historial references and gothic imagary Ferlik's painting and drawing is concerned with the role of women within our own, and , 'the mythical' world.
Often placing herself in a central role Ferlik creates strange landscapes combining a mishmash of iconography gleaned from historical and contemporary sources. Her work draws on a diverse range of imagery; symbols, mythology, childhood dreams, fairytales, fantasies, nightmares and psychological experiences which question the viewer's grip on reality. Much of Ferlik's work is based on drawings that are made subconsciously: erupting volcanoes, headless men and women fighting against one another, cells within which women are imprisoned, wolves, nudes, skeletons; and sex, all of which hold elements of cruel violence. This process of automatic drawing is a technique Ferlik adapts for painting.
Amalgam is key to her practice - a blend, a fusion—an amalgamation of everything into one. Ferlik references critical moments from the gothic to the renaissance and from renaissance to baroque. Long stories emerge from the works, imbued with psychological suffering supplied by surrealistic details though often rich with a dry humour that is entirely her own.
